Favorite books of 2018

This year I read or listened to an average of a book a week. So I had over 50 books to choose from as my favorites for 2018. The following recommendations are the cream of the crop from my perspective.

Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment

Authentic Happiness: Using the New Positive Psychology to Realize Your Potential for Lasting Fulfillment by Martin E.P. Seligman

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was filled with tests. I found it valuable to think about my level of happiness and signature strengths. I thought about what virtues I have and which ones I might want to place more focus upon in the future. I wish I had read the chapter on raising children when my kids were little. I understand more about how I can achieve more lasting happiness. And what I like most about the book is its hopeful and optimistic nature. It was very inspiring and I have recommended it many people.

Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges

Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges by Amy Cuddy

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Outstanding! I have been recommending this book right and left to young and older people alike. I found the power posture concept invaluable. The imposter syndrome rang true for me at times in my life. The book is filled with gems and I know I will read it again and soak in even more of its valuable content.

Breathing Room: Open Your Heart by Decluttering Your Home

Breathing Room: Open Your Heart by Decluttering Your Home by Lauren Rosenfeld

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read tons of books about decluttering. This one was excellent! The first part was about getting clear on the intention of each room. Each chapter offered a blessing for that room as well, and I liked that blessing a lot. The second part of the book dives into spiritual decluttering: heart, mental and emotional clutter, relationships, roles and responsibilities. I particularly loved the concept of passing your clutter through the three gates of meaning: “Is it true to my intentions? Do I use it? Is it kind to my heart and spirit?” I highly recommend this book!

The World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony

The World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony by Will Tuttle

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is a game changer. Ranks in the top 5 books I have ever read for positive impact in my life and thoughts. It is filled with compassion and wisdom. Books like this one can change the world in a profound way if you are open to it. The audio version is excellent, read by the author. You can hear his passion and compassion. Even though I finished the book, it lives on inside of me. I think about it every day and with every food purchase I make and every bite I take.

Robin

Robin by Dave Itzkoff

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I am fascinated by learning about the lives of legends. I loved Robin Williams. I grew up watching Mork and Mindy. I wanted to remember his achievements but also learn about the man behind the fame. I wanted to understand his humanity and honor his journey and final decision with more information than tabloids provide. I am glad I listened to this book on audio. The reader did a good job with Robin’s voice. I now have a deeper appreciation for Robin because of this book. I thank Robin for sharing his humor with us. May he rest in peace.

Beneath a Scarlet Sky

Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark T. Sullivan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Astounding. I couldn’t believe what one man could experience in the last few years of the war. I was totally enthralled and captivated by the story. I was also amazed to hear how so many Italians risked their lives to save Jews. Stories about the Resistance always intrigue me. The horrors of war always frighten me. This book is one of the best books I have read about War World II and I learned a lot about Italy during that time.
