Favorite books of 2023 | Lisa J. Shultz

I love to read, and I am a member of several book clubs. For 2023, I have chosen just four favorites:

Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister

This thriller pulled me in immediately, and I remained entrenched in the story to the very end. A mom witnesses her son commit a murder. Suddenly time moves backwards. Can she stop the crime before it happens? I could not figure out how it would work itself out! I thought the story was creative. I listened on Audible, and the reader was fantastic.

I Found You by Lisa Jewell

Another great thriller! The setting is a British seaside town where a single mom finds a man on the beach who has lost his memory. She invites this man into her home and tries to figure out who he is and what has happened to him. Meanwhile in London, a newlywed is trying to find her missing husband. Find out how it all comes together! I listened to this book on Audible. Very well read. I was engaged from beginning to end. I didn’t see where it was going most of the time.

Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus

I loved this book for a ton of reasons! I particularly appreciated the characters of Elizabeth Zott and her daughter Mad. Elizabeth Zott was bold in a time (early 1960s) that didn’t want women to be bold. She wanted other women to use their smarts and achieve new things that utilized their minds, talents and dreams. The term and application of “chemistry” was used in a variety of ways making that topic much more interesting than you might imagine. I also recommend the TV series.

Wish You Were Here by Jodi Picoult

This book takes a look at the Covid 19 pandemic from a few vantage points. Some people sailed through the pandemic relatively unscathed. If that is your experience, I doubt you will resonate with this book. On the other hand, if your life changed during and since Covid came to our world, then I think you will find the story captivating. Life trajectories were thrown off their course and many never returned to the direction they had been going. I was drawn into the book immediately and was surprised how the plot evolved towards the end. I found it worthy of my time to read.
